Here comes the snow!

Get ready for a cold snap - stock up your wild bird food now.

Here in the Midlands we are getting ready for a snow fall over the next 24 / 48 hours and although it takes a little getting around I quite like the thought of a layer of snow over the countryside (as long as it doesn't bring everything to a standstill!) snow brings a blanket of lovely ness to the fields and hedges and Winter wouldn't be the same without it. But we must take a few precautions as well. Not only for ourselves, keeping warm, getting supplies in and fuel to get around, but also for the wildlife in our gardens.

Keeping water fresh and ice free. Use a tennis ball or Ice Free to avoid freezing water.

Keeping food available to the birds and mammals. Only put enough out for one day to avoid rodent activity.

Bedding for nesting mammals and roosting birds - keep some dry leaves, moss, cotton wool etc in a small open ended box or plastic pipe on the ground so they can drag the material out when they need it.
