Woodpecker friendly feeder

Posted by British Bird Food 31/03/2014 0 Comment(s)
The Squirrel Buster Peanut is specially designed to accommodate the Woodpecker's feeding position. A Woodpecker has two forward and two backward facing claws, (zygodactyly) unlike most birds which have three forward and one backward facing claws (anisodactyl). The Woodpecker therefore relies on resting his tail feathers on the feeder for balance, this is the case with some Owls and Parrots, mainly those birds who climb tree bark. The Squirrel Buster Peanut has a section at the bottom of the feeder made of mesh, this is there to allow the Woodpecker to rest his tail feathers on whilst he is using the feeder. Of course, other birds like the Tree Creeper, Blue Tit and other birds which enjoy peanuts can also use the feeder, but the Squirrel can't! This squirrel proof feeder has a weight sensitive spring loaded system for foiling the best efforts of the Squirrel to get to the birds food. The outer casing / mesh simply moves down about half an inch to block off access to the feeder ports, no matter how hard the squirrel tries he will not be able  to get in to the Peanuts within the feeder. in the end he will get bored, give up and go and find food somewhere else with less effort involved.
