Good Hygiene
Hygiene is essential to the health of your birds that feed from your feeder. They are just as dependent on you for clean food as a pet dog or cat. Once they know where to find food, they will learn to trust it, and if a feeder is not cleaned regularly it can become contaminated with mould and fungus. It is also essential to keep your bird food in good condition. If it is in our re-useable bags, just re-seal them, and keep them dry. If you use a storage bin, it should be air tight.
For table feeders you can scape off any debis with a scraper. Avoid leaving food on the table overnight, this will attract rodents
To maintain a tube feeder you should scrub it out regularly, once a week or so is fine. Use a cleaning brush to scrub the inside of the tube. The NT09 peanut feeder is dishwasher proof! Peanuts are liable to contamination of aflatoxins; this is a colourless, odourless fungus, which can be fatal to birds. Always use good quality peanuts (ours are guaranteed aflatoxin free), and keep the mesh clean by washing in warm water.
Bird baths probably require the most attention. Water should be changed daily, and the bath washed out each time. Once a week it requires a good wash and scrub with a hard bristle brush.
