British Bird Food - wild bird food and bird feeder supplies
Why feed wild birds?
Feeding birds has changed from the times when birds were only fed to trap for the pot, to the Nature reserves providing shelter, to only feeding in the breeding season, until now when year round feeding is best for the birds.
In the days when birds were tempted into traps with food offerings, food was scarce enough for humans, and so birds were ‘fair game’. Thankfully, those days are past, as are the times when wild birds would be trapped to keep in cages in the living room. Now we have ample supplies of food, we can use feeding the birds as a pleasure, whether we observe them in a hide, out in the country, or from our windows; Millions of people are enjoying bird watching.
The practical side of feeding the birds offers many challenges, skills, euphoria, and unfortunately the odd bit of tragedy. The BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) and the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) both recommend feeding wild birds throughout the year.
